Review: Southern Comfort Bold Black Cherry
On its own Southern Comfort’s newest flavor “Bold Black Cherry” is a tad too strong for our tastes, but this isn’t sipping whiskey, this cordial is meant to be mixed.
We tried the suggested SoCo Bold Black Cherry in Coke and we found it slightly disappointing. The alcohol really cuts through the Coke taste and the drink tastes slightly unbalanced. Don’t get us wrong, this is a great twist on the more traditional SoCo and Coke and this drink will be a talking point at any party. You can taste the natural cherry flavor but it is more abrupt than we expected.
Going through our bar we experimented with several different twists on this flavored whiskey and then we hit pay dirt, a Southern Comfort Bold Black Cherry Manhattan. We guarantee it, this drink is made to impressed. We made the Manhattan in the traditional way, just substituting the whiskey/bourbon with the SoCo.
Southern Comfort Bold Black Cherry Manhattan
- 2 1/2 oz Southern Comfort Bold Black Cherry
- 3/4 oz sweet vermouth (We used Martini&Rossi Rosso)
- 1-3 dashes Angostura bitters (We prefer 3 dashes to the more traditional 1)
- 1 maraschino cherry
Combine the vermouth, SoCo and bitters with 2 – 3 ice cubes in a mixing glass. Stir gently. Place the cherry in a chilled cocktail glass and strain the mixture over the cherry.
