Foie Gras Producers Sue California

Well that didn’t take long– North America’s largest foie gras producers are challenging California’s new foie ban in Federal court.
California’s one-of-its-kind ban went into effect on July 1, it prohibits the manufacture and sale of the French delicacy. The state legislature put the law in place based on accusations of animal cruelty. Violators face a potential fine of as much as $1,000 a day.
The law suit is asking a judge for an injunction against the ban, arging that it is too vague and could affect other fowl production. The suit also claims that the law violates the U.S Constitution’s commerce clause because it affects out-of-state companies.
A southern California restaurateur is also challenging the law in court.
